Home Network Monitor

I’ve been in the IT world for the last 30+ years and for 13 years, being responsible for up time and device status. Retirement does not make those habits go away and I still want to know if there are problems. Enter Nagios.

There are several commercial Network Monitoring software packages available and some of them have a limited ‘free’ homelab version available.  I had a few requirements.

  • Low CPU & system requirement – Raspberry Pi 3B preferred
  • Low power & low heat
  • Headless with web interface
  • Alerting to phone

The NEMS implementation of Nagios fit all my requirements. Nagios is widely supported both commercially as well as by open source community. Adding additional OS platforms as well as testing sets to hosts allow me to track CPU utilization, system temperature, disk status.

As you can see, my home network is not just a simple network.  NEMS allows me to keep track of my office systems as well as the systems operating in the harsh environment of the ham shack.

This is an ongoing project.  If anyone finds this post and has questions, feel free to ask.
